From Roger and Hammerstein’s: ‘The King & I’:
“The result of this deception
Is very strange to tell
For when I fool the people I fear
I fool myself as well!”
When we are young we suffer.
In order to suffer less
we produce a behaviour
to masks how we are really feeling.
As get get older we forget
that what we are presenting to people
is not our true self.
So, as we get older,
(if we think about it at all)
we think our masking behaviour
is who we are.
It is not who we are
and the longer we leave discovering
true ourselves
the more difficult it is to sort out
what is – masking behaviour
and who we really are.
Not sure?
Try telling your best friend about
their repeated behaviour patterns.
And/or get a friend to video you throughout one day.
PS: Its never too late.
Someone local to here just got their PhD.
They are in their nineties.
