We are holding on to what we think is reality – rather than allowing ourselves to drop into the unknown.
Transcript:
The question has been asked, “Is the reason we are holding on to what we call reality, rather than dropping into the unnamable, the unknown, the unformed, is it because we don’t realize it is there?”
It is there. It is always there.
Now, I am going to tell you a little story that may seem like it has nothing to do with what we are talking about, but I will get to it at the end.
When I first started snow skiing, I went to Norway. The way they skied there then was, you were given skis that were made out of one piece of wood, no metal edges, no safety bindings and you put skins on the skis and walked uphill for hours. Then you took the skins off and you skied down. But here is the point, the instructor would say over and over and over to turn to the left put your right shoulder forwards, to turn to the right, put your left shoulder forwards, over and over and over. So that is what we did.
The next year I went to Austria and they said exactly the opposite, but burned into my brain was putting the right shoulder forwards to turn left, burned into the brain. Before I could put in the new instructions, I had to take out the old ones.
From the moment of your birth you are told how things are and how they are supposed to be, over and over and over. So you don’t look for anything else. Religion tells you exactly how it is and that is the way it is. If you dared to argue with that not so long ago, you got burned to the stake after being tortured. It is burned in there. You are born with it. This is the way it is.
For the few people that have an awakening experience, they know that this is not the way it is. It’s practically diametrically opposite. How is it? Nobody knows how to explain it. All they can say is what Buddha did for an hour and a half when he was asked, “What is it?” He spent, an hour and a half saying what it is not. It is not this. It is not that. It is not up. It is not down. It is not in. It is not out. It is not a man. It is not a woman. It is not possible. It is not impossible, because it does not have an opposite.
We do not realize that our whole concept of everything is based on opposites. What is good is not bad. What is bad is not good. Everything is based on its opposite. This other space has no opposite. We could say it includes both, but that is not correct either. It is totally different.
And there is no name for it.
The Tao, the Way, the Kingdom of God, the Hidden Harmony, none of that says anything, because when we understand what it is, “Hidden Harmony. Oh! It is the unhidden chaos.” That is the opposite and there is no opposite.
So what is this state? Well, everybody that experiences it gives a different description and of course as soon as it is described, that contaminates it, because the words just are not big enough, because the brain is not big enough.
Again, we have not been led to look at the fact that the brain is limited. The brain is limited. There is another sense, so it does not have an opposite. Here is the main thing; it does not have an observer. Now at one stage, there is still an observer, but in the unformed no observer. And Yet – this yet cannot be explained – that there is some sort of awareness, but it is not separate.
So again, in the east they say, “When the seer and the seeing are one.” Then our mind says, “Oh, it means ….“ No, it does not mean that. It does not mean anything. So, the unformed, that is my way of attempting to describe it, they say that everybody has their different way.
This is what I mean by the unformed. It has no form. It is an is-ness. Then we could say, it is an energy. But as soon as you say it is an energy, you have created the opposite again. No, it is not an energy. No, it is not anything we can describe, not anything we can think of.
It is! And everything is included in that is-ness. It is said that out of the whole came the whole and the whole remained. So let us call the whole for a moment the unformed. We will give it a name. We will say, “It’s an energy, a frequency, a vibration.” It is not but we will say this. Out of that comes what in the East they call ”The Illusion of life”. Maya, the game, the illusion – out of it comes. It is still real in its own way. So our mind has a reality, our thoughts have a reality and… there is something else.
So the question was, “If you are not in touch with that, how do you get in touch?”
Well, what they say in the East, you sit eighteen hours a day for several lives. Eighty thousand I think.
But something else is happening on the planet right now. Something else is happening. It is as though a certain frequency has been stepped up and we can plug into that more easily than we ever have. Why do we not plug in? It is because, we get to this space, where it feels as though everything you know, everything that seems real, starts to fade, shimmer and starts to disappear. It does not feel real anymore. Then there is the sense of dying. What it is dying to the illusion but the system does not know that.
The system is designed to take care of you. You are dying, come back! If you don’t, you will start to drift into something else. Then again, comes an emergency, “I am dying.” It is true. The I that you have been holding on to no longer becomes relevant. There is this Something Else that includes you but not as a separation. There is a blending. There is a melting. We could say disappearing, but none of these words actually say it. It is just something else.
Magnificent? Incredible? They do not match either because in a way as the threshold is passed, it becomes very ordinary. In Zen they say, when somebody wakes up, “They smile and have a cup of tea.” So ordinary! Not blissful, because blissful has its opposite. Not wonderful, because it has its opposite. No, you cannot describe it. It is just – just-ness, being-ness, is-ness, the peace that passes all understanding, the last bit, passes all understanding. So it is not peace as we know it. It is peace that does not have an opposite.
In that state there is a realization that everything is perfect. It cannot not be perfect. It is exactly the way it is supposed to be in that very moment, which does not mean that it has to stay, even for a Nano second. But the moment, perfect, perfect, perfect.
We have been programmed to achieve. What we are trying to achieve is a tiny, tiny, tiny little idea of what we have been told this other side is about. So we are not even trying to achieve something that has any outcome, not appropriate. That is the way that we have been programmed. “Oh! So there is something else? I have to do something to the something else!”, but it is just the opposite. Do not do anything!
We use to have a saying when I came from, “Don’t just sit, do something”. Just the opposite! Do not do something. Just sit there. This does not mean just sit there. Listen! Sitting there, does not mean just sitting there. If there is something that comes, there is some motivation to do and you are out of the way. You let the doing happen! Action through none-action, I think Zen says. You allow!
So how come so few people live that? Because they have got to be here to start with. Check in your life. How often are you here now, just for now, without looking at the past, without thinking what the future could be, should be. Just here now! My experience is, out of being here, the next thing unfolds.
This is a change of frequency. If you just sit there and do nothing, what you will start doing is being there for other people. Anyway, we are talking about something totally different. This dimension is about something and part of it is about unity, coming back to the oneness. That was the title of the first book, “The Experiment is over.” What’s the experiment? Duality! Pushing everything apart, good and bad and right and wrong, pushing it as far as it will go, good and evil. Now it wants to come back again. We all want to come back again. Somewhere, we all want to come back again.
So that is interpreted of … “Oh, yes the family…”, but the family is not just the mother and the father and the children and the grandparents. No, it is everybody and everything; not just the people, not just the animals, the insects, the trees, everything.
Sometime just sit and look, preferably at something alive, like a tree or a bush and preferably in the open. Just look, just look! You will hear the mind just chattering away, but instead of listening to the mind, look, look out and you might find the air is not actually empty. The air has a shimmer to it and then look through the air to the tree and you will find the tree is shimmering as well. That shimmering is blending with all the other shimmering. There is a hidden harmony. This shimmer is universal. It is the whole.
You might find yourself a little dizzy. The trees may even start to become transparent and disappear as though they are dropping back into the unformed. But it is you who is dropping back into the unformed because without you that tree is not there. Without you it is not green or brown, without you, it does not have movement. Letting things be.
Then you might feel as though you are going to die. Even more scary, you start losing the sense of who it is, that is dying. Just stay there with it, feel your whole essence, vibrating with it, blending with it, disappearing into it. Then when you need to come back, there is something practical, come back slowly and realize that that was not an illusion. That was closer to reality then the chair you are sitting on. The chair has its reality. Slowly come back.
As you do, whatever you are going to do, stay in touch. Do not contract, don’t disappear, or if you do, because something unpleasant happened, be aware of the contraction. “Oh contraction!” You feel more solid, actually you feel more safe. Take a deep breath and let it go again.
If you do that often enough you will find, you never get angry, you never get judgmental, all fear disappears and you realize, everything is this indescribable state which we could reduce, contaminate slightly, to the word love.
Because the true word of love is – no lover and no loved.
No seeing and no seer.
Just – Just-ness
